GKS(한국 정부 장학생)로서의 경험과 이 프로그램을 통해 배운 것에 대해 말씀해 주십시오.

캐나다에서 학부와 석사과정을 마친 후, 그때까지 특별한 해외 경험이 없었던 저는 박사과정을 해외에서 밟아야겠다고 생각했습니다. 제게는 영어와 프랑스어가 아닌 새로운 외국어를 배워보고 싶다는 생각이 늘 있었는데, GKS 프로그램이 이런 부분을 모두 충족시킨다는 것을 알게 되면서 본격적으로 한국 유학을 위해 교수님을 찾아보기 시작했습니다. 긴 탐색 끝에 제 관심 분야에서 오랜 기간 연구를 해오신 서울대학교 안성훈 교수님을 알게 되어 이메일을 보냈습니다. 그리고 교수님께서 정성껏 답장을 해주신 덕분에 저는 장학금을 신청하였고, 운이 좋게도 장학생 프로그램에 참여할 수 있었습니다. 한국에서의 첫해는 정말 흥미로웠습니다. 다양한 배경의 사람들을 만나 그들을 통해 세계 각국에서 일어나는 모든 사건을 간접적으로 경험하였으며, 그것이 우리 모두에게 미치는 영향에 대해 다양한 시각으로 생각해볼 수 있었습니다. 한편, 박사학위 연구를 진행하면서 저는 당시 급성장하고 있었던 스마트 소재를 이용한 소프트 로봇 공학에 초점을 맞추었습니다. 이 분야에 관심이 많았던 저는 보다 완성도 있는 성과를 도출하여 취업 시장에서의 경쟁력을 높이기 위해 대부분의 시간을 실험실에서 보냈습니다. 당시 연구실에서 보낸 시간 덕분에 지금의 커리어를 쌓을 수 있었습니다. 그리고 지금 이 분야에서 직업 생활의 기회를 잡았다는 것에 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.

Please share your experience as a GKS scholar and what you have learned from this scholarship program.

I did my Bachelor and Masters in Canada and was thinking of doing my PhD somewhere abroad where I had not already spent significant time. I was also interested in learning a third language beyond English and French. The GKS scholarship fit all these boxes so I started looking for potential advisors in South Korea. After much digging, I found out about Prof. Sung-Hoon Ahn in Seoul National University who was doing research in my field of interest, so I sent him an e-mail. He replied enthusiastically so I applied for the scholarship and was lucky enough to be selected for the scholarship. The first year in Korea was quite interesting as I was surrounded by people of very different backgrounds and every world event affected someone I personally knew so that gave me a very different perspective on world affairs and how it affects all of us. My doctoral research focused on soft robotics using smart materials which was a burgeoning field of research at the time. This was quite interesting to me and I spent most of my time in the laboratory to get more publishable results and increase my competitiveness on the job market. This time spent in the laboratory is perhaps what enabled me to have the career that I have now, and I am thankful for the opportunity to work on this field which has now become the central of my professional life.



졸업 후 경험/이야기를 말씀해 주십시오..

2015년 8월에 졸업을 한 후, 저는 박사과정을 밟았던 실험실에서 박사후 과정을 이어나갔으며 2016년까지 해외 우수 신진연구자 유치사업(Korean Research Fellowship, KRF)에 참여하게 되었습니다. 이 기간 동안 저는 교수직에 지원했는데, 2016년 3월부터 성균관대학교 기계공학부에서 전임(tenure-track) 교원 자리를 얻어 ‘Soft Robotics Lab’이라는 제 연구실을 설립했습니다. 학부에는 로봇공학 분야에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 최혁렬 교수님 외에도 저와 같은 관심사를 가진 교수들이 여럿 있었습니다. 동료 교수들과 학생들이 최선을 다한 덕분에 저희는 한국연구재단(NRF)과 한국산업기술평가관리원(KEIT)으로부터 개인 및 팀 연구 지원 자금을 확보하였고, 또한 이러한 프로젝트를 통해 중소기업 및 대기업과 협력 관계를 구축했습니다. 현재 제 연구실에는 박사 과정 9명과 박사후 연구원을 포함한 12명의 대학원생이 있습니다. 또한 저는 2019년에 초청된 파키스탄의 GKS 학생을 지도하고 있습니다. 현재 저는 IEEE Robotics & Automation Letters, Intelligent Service Robotics 등 3개 저널의 부편집장으로 활동하고 있으며, 국제 심포지엄인 PRESM(International Symposium on Precision Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing)에서 Young Researcher Award를 수상했습니다.

Please share your experience/story after graduation.

After my graduation in August 2015, I conducted post-doctoral studies in the same lab in which I conducted my Ph.D. studies and received the Korean Research Fellowship (KRF) for the period of 2015-2016. During this period, I applied for faculty positions, and finally was able to secure a tenure-track position at Sungkyunkwan University in the School of Mechanical Engineering starting in March 2016 where I established my own laboratory called “Soft Robotics Lab”. There are several other professors in the department whose research interests aligned with my own including Prof. Hyouk Ryeol Choi who is a famous robotics professor. Through working with these other professors and through the effort of my students, we have been lucky enough to secure steady funding for both individual and team research from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and from the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT). We also have established collaborations with small and medium enterprises as well as large conglomerates through these projects. My lab currently has 12 graduate students, including 9 who are PhD degree course, and a post-doctoral researcher. I am also supervising a GKS student from Pakistan who was invited in 2019. I am also an associate editor for three journals including IEEE Robotics & Automation Letters and Intelligent Service Robotics and received the Young Researcher Award at the International Symposium on Precision Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing.



장래 계획과 GKS 동문에 대한 의견/생각을 자세하게 설명해 주십시오.

저는 GKS가 한국의 고등교육시스템의 세계화를 진전시키고 있으며, 프로그램을 통해 양질의 교육을 받은 많은 졸업생들을 한국을 비롯한 전 세계의 노동력으로 양성하고 있다고 생각합니다. 한국어를 배웠던 시간은 다양한 배경을 가진 친구들를 사귀는 데 많은 도움이 되었으며 소중한 경험이었습니다. 또한 GKS에서 보낸 시간 역시 정말 즐거웠으며, 이를 통해 한국에서 좋은 커리어를 쌓을 수도 있었습니다. 앞으로도 GKS가 전 세계의 뛰어난 학생들을 한국에 유치하여 한국 교육의 세계화를 이끌어나가기를 기대하겠습니다. 마지막으로 개인적인 희망이라면, 앞으로도 훌륭한 연구를 계속해서 성균관대학교의 정교수가 되어 연구실의 졸업생들에게 좋은 일자리를 확보해 주고 싶습니다.

Please explain in detail your future plan and comments/thoughts for GKS Alumni.

I think that GKS is really driving forward the internationalization of the Korean tertiary education system and bringing a lot of well-educated graduates into the workforce both within Korea and outside of Korea. I also think that the year of Korean language has helped me make friends from very diverse backgrounds and was an invaluable experience to me. I really enjoyed my time in GKS, and it has enabled me to build an exciting career in Korea. I hope that it continues bringing bright students to Korea and keep driving forward the internationalization of schools. Personally, I hope to keep conducting great research, to become a full professor at Sungkyunkwan University and to secure good employment for the graduates of my laboratory.
