A Journey of Learning and Culture: My Memories in South Korea as a GKS Scholar
In August 2014, I embarked on a life-changing journey to South Korea to pursue my graduate studies, brimming with excitement about experiencing a new country, language, and culture. My initial apprehensions quickly faded as I encountered the warmth and kindness of Korean people, making my transition into this foreign land much smoother than anticipated.
My Korean adventure began at Pai Chai University in Daejeon, where I undertook a mandatory Korean language course. This immersive experience introduced me to skilled teachers and international classmates, making learning enjoyable. By the end of the year, I achieved a TOPIK Level 5 certification. Beyond classroom learning, the program included cultural and social events, such as field trips to Jeju Island and Busan, and weekend explorations of Daejeon, which deepened my appreciation of Korea’s rich heritage and beauty. After completing my language course, I moved to Gwangju to pursue a PhD in Library and Information Science at Chonnam National University (CNU). This phase marked a new chapter filled with academic rigor, critical thinking, and personal growth. My professors' guidance and my peers' support helped me earn a PhD with an Award for Academic Excellence in August 2019. The Korean language skills I had acquired played a crucial role in navigating this academic journey.
Living in Gwangju for four years was a remarkable experience. Known for its vibrant democracy and cultural heritage, the city offered numerous opportunities for personal and professional enrichment. I worked as a research assistant at the May 18 Memorial Foundation engaged in organizing and computerizing records in its archives. Additionally, I served as a student reporter for the Asia Culture Center (ACC), where I reported on various cultural events and interviewed prominent Sri Lankan visitors. I also volunteered as an interpreter and labor counselor at the Gwangju Migrant Worker Support Center, assisting Sri Lankan workers with employment-related issues and legal matters. These engagements allowed me to give back to the community and forge meaningful connections with my compatriots in Korea.One of the most fulfilling aspects of my time in Korea was my involvement in the UNESCO Cross-Cultural Awareness Program (CCAP). As a cultural exchange volunteer, I visited over 30 schools across Gwangju and neighboring regions, introducing Sri Lankan culture to local students. Through interactive lessons featuring Sinhala greetings, traditional songs, games, and Ceylon tea, I contributed to fostering multicultural understanding.
My family life in Gwangju added another layer of richness to my Korean experience. My daughter was born and raised there until the age of three, giving us firsthand exposure to Korea's medical, welfare, and preschool education systems. These experiences strengthened my resilience and deepened my connection to Korean society. I also made time to complete the Social Integration Program Level V, further enriching my theoretical understanding of Korean society. My association with the Sri Lankan community in Gwangju, particularly through the Mugak-Sa temple, offered spiritual solace and opportunities to organize social and cultural activities.
Throughout my stay, I had the honor of sharing my culture with a wider audience through Korean media. Notably, I participated in a live program on Gwangju MBC TV to discuss Sri Lankan traditions and cuisine during Chuseok and appeared on GFN Radio to talk about my work at the ACC. Reflecting on my journey, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunities provided by the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS). The knowledge, skills, and experiences I gained have significantly enriched my professional career as an academic librarian and researcher in Sri Lanka. The bonds I formed with Korea, its people, and its culture remain strong, and I aspire to continue promoting Korean culture and education in Sri Lanka. This journey has been transformative, leaving me with enduring memories and invaluable lessons. I am proud to be a GKS alumnus and look forward to fostering deeper ties between Sri Lanka and Korea in the years to come.

배움과 문화의 여정: 한국에서의 GKS 장학생으로서의 나의 추억

2014년 8월, 저는 새로운 나라, 언어, 문화를 경험할 수 있다는 설렘으로 가득 찬 대학원 공부를 위해 인생을 바꾸기 위해 한국으로 여행을 떠났습니다. 한국인의 따뜻함과 친절함을 접하면서 처음의 불안감은 금세 사라졌고, 이 이국 땅으로의 전환은 예상보다 훨씬 순조로웠습니다.
제 한국어 모험은 대전에 있는 배재대학교에서 시작되어 필수 한국어 과정을 수강했습니다. 이 몰입감 넘치는 경험을 통해 숙련된 교사와 국제 반 친구들에게 소개되었고, 배움이 즐거웠습니다. 연말에는 TOPIK 5급 자격증을 취득했습니다. 교실 학습 외에도 제주도와 부산 현장 학습, 대전 주말 탐방 등 문화-사회적 이벤트가 진행되어 한국의 풍부한 유산과 아름다움에 대한 감상이 깊어졌습니다. 어학 과정을 마친 후 광주로 건너가 전남대학교 도서관 및 정보과학 박사 과정을 밟았습니다. 이 단계는 학문적 엄격함, 비판적 사고, 개인적 성장으로 가득 찬 새로운 장을 열었습니다. 교수님들의 지도와 동료들의 지원 덕분에 2019년 8월 학업우수상 박사 학위를 취득할 수 있었습니다. 제가 습득한 한국어 실력은 이 학문적 여정을 헤쳐나가는 데 결정적인 역할을 했습니다.
광주에서 4년 동안 생활한 것은 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 활기찬 민주주의와 문화유산으로 유명한 광주는 개인적, 직업적 풍요를 위한 다양한 기회를 제공했습니다. 저는 5.18기념재단에서 연구 조교로 근무하며 기록 보관소의 기록을 정리하고 전산화하는 일을 했습니다. 또한 아시아문화전당(ACC)에서 학생 기자로 활동하며 다양한 문화 행사를 취재하고 스리랑카 방문객들을 인터뷰하기도 했습니다. 또한 광주이주노동자지원센터에서 통역사와 노동 상담사로 봉사하며 스리랑카 근로자들의 고용 관련 문제와 법적 문제를 지원했습니다. 이러한 활동을 통해 지역사회에 환원하고 한국에 있는 동포들과 의미 있는 인맥을 쌓을 수 있었습니다. 한국에서 보낸 시간 중 가장 보람찬 부분 중 하나는 유네스코 문화교류 프로그램(CCAP)에 참여한 것이었습니다. 문화 교류 봉사자로서 광주와 인근 지역의 30여 개 학교를 방문해 현지 학생들에게 스리랑카 문화를 소개했습니다. 신할라 인사, 전통 노래, 게임, 실론 차 등을 주제로 한 인터랙티브 수업을 통해 다문화 이해를 높이는 데 기여했습니다.
광주에서의 가족 생활은 한국 경험에 또 다른 풍요로움을 더했습니다. 제 딸은 세 살 때까지 그곳에서 태어나고 자랐고, 한국의 의료, 복지, 유치원 교육 시스템을 직접 접할 수 있었습니다. 이러한 경험을 통해 회복탄력성이 강화되고 한국 사회와의 연결이 깊어졌습니다.
