Reflecting on my time in Korea as a GKS scholar brings back an array of cherished memories, each filled with growth, cultural discovery, and the warmth of meaningful connections. My journey began at Busan University of Foreign Studies, where I embarked on an exciting yet challenging adventure of learning the Korean language. Busan university of foreign studies became my first gateway to Korean culture and society, and it was here that I met many incredible GKS scholars from around the world. Together, we created unforgettable experiences, forming a tight-knit community that supported and celebrated one another throughout our journeys.
One of the most enchanting aspects of my first year in Korea was travelling to Jinhae(진해) in order to experience the beauty of Korean spring. Our group often organized trips to marvel at the breathtaking cherry blossoms, Mugunghwa, and other spring flowers that adorned the city. These outings were more than just sightseeing; they were opportunities to bond and celebrate the wonder of nature together, cameras in hand, laughter echoing through the soft spring air. Beyond nature, we also immersed ourselves in the vibrant city life of Busan, including visits to iconic landmarks like the Gamcheon village & Busan Lotte Tower. Standing atop the tower, we shared dreams of our futures while taking in the mesmerizing cityscape, a moment that felt both grounding and aspirational. Our cultural exchange didn’t stop at trips and sightseeing. Our language course also included cultural exchange programs where we participated in cultural events in Busan to showcase the rich traditions of our respective countries. As we prepared dances, music, and displays of our cultural clothes, I felt a profound pride in sharing Ethiopian culture while also learning about the diverse heritages of my fellow scholars. These events created a melting pot of traditions and forged a sense of global unity that I will always treasure. A standout memory after my language year was our reunion trip to MBC 문화동산 (대장금 테마파크) with my language school GKS scholar friends, a historical theme park inspired by Korean dramas like Dae Jang Geum. Walking through the meticulously designed sets, we felt transported to the Joseon dynasty, donning traditional Hanbok and reenacting scenes from famous dramas. This cultural immersion deepened our understanding of Korea’s rich history and brought us closer as a group, united by shared curiosity and joy.

My time in Korea also gave me the opportunity to fulfill a personal dream: attending my first BTS concert in Gwangju. The energy, passion, and unity of the crowd were electrifying, leaving me awestruck. Being surrounded by fans from all over the world reminded me of the global influence of Korean culture and how deeply it resonates with people. It was a surreal moment, not just as a fan but as a part of the vibrant culture I had come to love.
All of these experiences were made possible by the incredible Global Korea Scholarship program. GKS offered not just financial support but also a platform for cultural exchange and personal growth. The program fostered an environment where scholars from various backgrounds could thrive academically, explore Korea’s rich heritage, and build lifelong friendships. Through GKS, I gained not only academic skills but also memories that I carry with me as a reminder of the beauty of cultural diversity and shared humanity.
As I look back, I realize that my time as a GKS scholar was much more than a chapter of academic pursuit—it was a transformative journey that broadened my horizons and enriched my soul. The bonds I formed with my fellow scholars, the adventures we embarked on, and the lessons we learned together are treasures I will cherish forever.

GKS 장학생으로서 한국에서 보낸 시간을 되돌아보면 성장과 문화적 발견, 의미 있는 인연의 따뜻함으로 가득 찬 소중한 추억들이 떠오릅니다. 저의 여정은 부산외국어대학교에서 시작되어 한국어를 배우는 흥미진진하면서도 도전적인 모험을 시작했습니다. 부산외국어대학교는 한국 문화와 사회로 가는 첫 관문이 되었고, 이곳에서 전 세계에서 온 수많은 놀라운 GKS 장학생들을 만났습니다. 함께 잊을 수 없는 경험을 만들어내며 여행 내내 서로를 응원하고 축하하는 끈끈한 공동체를 형성했습니다.
한국에서의 첫 해에서 가장 매혹적인 모습 중 하나는 한국의 봄의 아름다움을 체험하기 위해 진해 여행한 것이었습니다. 우리 일행은 숨막히는 벚꽃, 무궁화 등 도시를 장식한 봄꽃을 감상하기 위해 여행을 자주 조직했습니다. 이러한 나들이는 단순한 관광 그 이상의 의미를 지니고 자연의 경이로움을 함께 축하하는 기회, 손에 카메라를 들고 부드러운 봄 공기를 맞으며 웃음을 자아냈습니다. 자연을 넘어 감천마을과 부산 롯데타워 등 상징적인 랜드마크를 방문하는 등 활기찬 부산의 도시 생활에도 몰입했습니다. 타워 꼭대기에 서서 매혹적인 도시 풍경을 감상하며 우리의 미래에 대한 꿈을 나누며 땅과 열망을 동시에 느낄 수 있는 순간이었습니다.
우리의 문화 교류는 여행과 관광에서 멈추지 않았습니다. 또한 부산에서 열리는 문화 행사에 참여하여 각국의 풍부한 전통을 선보이는 문화 교류 프로그램도 진행되었습니다. 춤과 음악, 문화 의상 전시회를 준비하면서 에티오피아 문화를 공유하는 동시에 동료 학자들의 다양한 유산에 대해 알게 된 것에 대한 깊은 자부심을 느꼈습니다. 이러한 행사를 통해 전통의 용광로가 만들어졌고, 항상 소중히 간직할 글로벌 통일감을 형성했습니다.
어학연수 후 눈에 띄는 추억은 한국 드라마에서 영감을 받은 역사 테마파크인 MBC 문화동산(대장금 테마파크)에서 어학원 GKS 장학생 친구들과 재회 여행을 떠난 것입니다. 세심하게 디자인된 세트장을 걸으며 조선 시대로 옮겨간 듯한 느낌을 받았습니다. 이러한 문화적 몰입은 한국의 풍부한 역사에 대한 이해를 깊게 하고, 공동의 호기심과 기쁨으로 하나가 된 그룹으로서 우리를 더 가깝게 만들었습니다.

한국에서의 시간은 광주에서 열리는 첫 번째 방탄소년단 콘서트에 참석하는 개인적인 꿈을 이룰 수 있는 기회이기도 했습니다. 관객들의 에너지와 열정, 단결력이 감동적이어서 놀라움을 남겼습니다. 전 세계 팬들에게 둘러싸여 있는 것은 한국 문화의 세계적인 영향력과 사람들에게 얼마나 깊은 울림을 주는지 상기시켜 주었습니다. 팬으로서뿐만 아니라 제가 사랑하게 된 활기찬 문화의 일부로서 초현실적인 순간이었습니다.
