Registration as an alien

A foreigner who will be staying in Korea for more than 90 days from the date of arrival must register as an alien at the immigration/foreign affairs office having jurisdiction over his/her place of residence within 90 days of the date of arrival in the country.

Alien registration period

  • Foreigners wishing to stay in Korea for more than 90 days
    • Within 90 days of the date of entry
  • Foreigners who have been granted residency or permission to change their residency status
    • When they received permission (immediately)
      Example) A Canadian citizen holding a B-2 (tourist pass) should register as an alien when applying for a change in residency status after staying for 5 months.

Documents for submission

  • Application form, passport, 1 photo (photo taken within 6 months), certificate of enrollment (research student) issued after the date of entry, fee
  • Tuberculosis screening certificate (applies only to those asked to do so)
    • Based on the current exemption rule in the guidelines on studying in Korea, this requirement applies only to holders of visa issued before July 1, 2016 when a tuberculosis screening certificate did not need to be submitted to a Korean embassy.
  • Proof of residence
  • Exemptions from the obligation of alien registration
    • Exemptions from the obligation of alien registration: The following persons are exempted from mandatory registration as an alien:
      • Persons engaged in diplomacy, public affairs, and agreements (A-1, A-2, A-3)
      • Persons engaged in important work related to diplomacy, industry, or national defense, their families, and other foreigners deemed by the Minister of Justice as warranting special exemption from alien registration
      • Canadian nationals who enter the country without a visa and plan to stay for less than 6 months
