Banking services

Foreigners living in Korea have access to many kinds of banking products and financial services, including deposits, funds, and insurance products through financial institutions. However, please note that all financial transactions are subject to relatively strict domestic regulations, and financial transactions of foreigners residing in Korea may be restricted in some cases.

In the case of foreign currency exchange transactions, depending on the type of transaction, foreigners might be asked to submit documents, and upper limits in the transaction amount may apply, so close attention must be paid to related regulations.
Typical banking hours are from 9 AM to 4 PM.
    • What you need
Form of identification (passport, alien registration card, resident registration card), stamp (signature), proof of purpose of financial transaction
    • Take a number
      from the ticket machine.
      Wait for your turn.

      * Check your number on the electronic display board.
    • Tell the bank clerk that
you are here to open a bank account or get a bankbook.
If needed, you should also apply for Internet banking and cash card (a card that lets you deposit and withdraw cash using an ATM).
    • After filling out the application form and entering your 4-digit
      bank account access code and
      cash card access code,
your bank account is open for your use.
  • Foreigners wishing to send money overseas can do so at a nearby bank.
Remittances can be made through foreign exchange banks, and up to USD 100,000 per year can be sent overseas without the need to bring supporting documents.
If the amount exceeds US$100,000, you must submit documents requested by the bank.
Since each bank may have different fees, it is advisable to research in advance before making a remittance.
  • Foreign currencies or traveler's checks can be easily exchanged for Korean currency at currency exchange corners located in Korean banks and airports.
As the currencies available for exchange may differ by bank, however, you should contact the bank in advance when exchanging large amounts of money or exchanging currencies other than US dollars.
Moreover, since Internet banking offers better exchange rates when converting currencies, it is a good idea to utilize Internet banking.
When transferring money to a foreign bank account, you can send money quickly and easily through telegraphic transfer.
