Change of residency status

This is the application that must be filed if a foreigner who is registered as an alien wants to engage in activities permitted in a residency status other than his/her current residency status. This application must be submitted before the applicant's permitted period of stay expires. Appointments for visits can be made at the relevant immigration office (or branch office), and application can be filed by visiting the office on the appointment date.

What is change of residency status?

  • This refers to a situation wherein a foreigner residing in Korea ceases activities permitted under his or her current residency status and wishes to engage in activities corresponding to a different residency status.

When to apply

  • Until a foreigner engages in activities permitted under a different residency status
  • When a foreigner who was given a residency status corresponding to diplomatic, official, or agreement-related activities has changed his or her livelihood, a change of residency status must be filed within 30 days of such livelihood change.

Documents for submission

  • Application for change of residency status
  • Passport
  • Alien registration card (if applicable)
  • Attached documents for each status of stay

    • General job search, D-10-1
      The D-10-1 visa permits a person to work as an intern prior to full-time employment. It is a visa for pursuing job-seeking activities (simple labor and labor internship work are not allowed) for the purpose of getting a full-time job in professional fields allowed under E-1~E-7 visas. Once a person is hired for a full-time job, his or her visa must be changed to one suitable for the specific job.

      • Period: 6 months at a time, extendable up to 2 years
        (up to 2 years, within 1 year, internship is only possible for up to 6 months per company)
      • Documents submitted: documents stipulated in the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration and Alien Registration Management Act
        • Standard documents (application form, photo, passport copy, fee, ID copy)
        • Job search activity plan (job search activity details for the past 6 months and future plans)
        • Documents proving Korean language proficiency, career experience certificate (only for those that apply)
        • Diploma
        • Proof of expenses required for stay (minimum of 900,000 per month x 6 months = around 5.4 million won)
          The proof of expenses required for stay is waived for persons who are changing their status from a student (D-2) visa to a job-seeking (D-10) visa for the first time.
        • Proof of residency (lease agreement)
